Why CIEDE2000 Math Outperforms Traditional Separation Plugins
Discover why human optical perception models eliminate muddy spot blends and guarantee cleaner underbase chokes in textile screen printing.
Why CIEDE2000 Math Outperforms Traditional Separation Plugins
For over twenty years, textile screen printers have relied on legacy Photoshop separation actions or RGB-channel math plugins to convert full-color artwork into spot color films.
While these tools worked well enough for simple vector cartoons, they frequently break down when faced with complex vintage graphics, watercolor washes, and subtle skin tone gradients. The result? Muddy brown overlaps, washed-out highlights, and excessive press setup times.
The Flaw in Euclidean Color Distance
Traditional plugins calculate color difference using basic Euclidean distance in standard RGB or CMY space:
$$\Delta E = \sqrt{(R_2 - R_1)^2 + (G_2 - G_1)^2 + (B_2 - B_1)^2}$$
The human eye does not perceive color differences equally across the spectrum. For example:
- The human eye is extremely sensitive to minute shifts in saturated yellows and skin tones.
- The human eye is much less sensitive to differences in deep blues and dark violets.
When a software algorithm uses linear math, it misjudges where one spot ink should hand off to the next, causing unwanted ink mixing on the press.
The CIEDE2000 Perceptual Standard
CIEDE2000 (formally published as ISO/CIE 11664-6) is the gold standard of modern industrial colorimetry. It incorporates complex weighting functions for lightness ($S_L$), chroma ($S_C$), and hue ($S_H$), as well as an interactive rotation term ($R_T$) to account for the human visual system’s non-linearities in the blue-purple region.
By applying CIEDE2000 formulas to high-resolution raster files:
- ScreenSeparations identifies the exact perceptual spot inks needed to faithfully reproduce the artwork.
- Smooth gradients fade naturally to zero without abrupt plate cut-offs.
- Highlight whites and base whites are strictly isolated.
AM Halftone Film Positives with Technical Slugs
Once channels are perceptually separated, ScreenSeparations outputs production-ready AM halftone positive films:
- Configurable Screen Frequency: 45, 55, or 65 LPI matched to mesh counts (from 120/48T to 305/120T).
- Anti-Moiré Angles: Standard rosette angles (22.5° offset) to prevent harsh moiré patterns on the textile carousel.
- Technical Slugs: Embedded film labels indicating Job Name, Screen Number, PMS Color Name, Mesh Recommendation, and registration crosses.
